Abstract

Background : Menstrual disorder is one of gynecologist problem that is considered serious to give impact on quality of life. Menstrual disorder mostly affects women in their final teenage year, those menstrual disorder can be identified as premenstrual syndrome (PMS) which are unstable mood swings and pain of the abdomen in this case dysmenorrhea. Menstrual disorder can affect 5- 15% of reproductive age women in developing countries, this may not be life threatening but it can interrupt someone’s daily activity. Aim : This study is conducted to ascertain that there is an effect of premenstrual syndrome on students’ academic performance. Methods : This is an analytic observational using cross-sectional study, which is performed among 90 female students of batch 2015 and 2016 of Food Technology of Pelita Harapan University, Karawaci. Research instruments are semistructured and self-administered questionnaire. Collected data will be analyzed using chi-square. Results : Female respondents age 19-20 years old with 86 out of 90 respondents (95.6%) have mood disorder moderate, 4 respondents (4.4%) have mood disorder severe, and 52 out of 90 respondents have dysmenorrhea. The analysis result shows that mood disorder moderate and severe (p=0.245) have an OR value of 5.400 (95% CI, 0.472-61.752), and dysmenorrhea (p=0.694) with an OR value of 1.400 (95% CI, 0.267-7.349) Conclusion : Premenstrual syndrome doesn’t have an effect on academic performance; however it can increase the risk to lower academic performances / Latar Belakang : Gangguan menstruasi adalah salah satu masalah ginekologi yang cukup serius karena dapat berdampak pada kualitas hidup. Gangguan menstruasi kebanyakan dialami wanita pada masa remaja akhir, gangguan yang dialami berupa sindroma premenstruasi (premenstrual syndrome= PMS) yakni perubahan emosi yang tidak stabil (mood disorder) hingga rasa nyeri pada daerah perut yaitu dismenorea. 5-15% wanita usia reproduktif di negara berkembang dapat mengalami gangguan menstruasi, hal ini tidak mengancam jiwa namun sangat mengganggu aktifitas sehari-hari. Tujuan : Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh sindroma premenstruasi pada performa akademik pelajar. Metode : Penelitian yang dilakukan berupa observasional analitik dengan cara studi potong lintang, dilakukan pada 90 mahasiswi angkatan 2015 dan 2016 Teknologi Pangan Universitas Pelita Harapan (UPH), Karawaci. Instrumen yang digunakan berupa kuesioner semi-structured dan self-administered. Data yang terkumpul akan diolah menggunakan chi-square. Hasil : 86 dari 90 responden (95.6 %) mahasiswi usia 19-20 tahun memiliki mood disorder moderate, 4 responden (4.4%) memiliki mood disorder severe, dan 52 dari 90 responden (57.8%) memiliki dismenorea. Hasil analisis didapatkan mood disorder moderate dan severe (p=0.245) dengan nilai OR 5.400 (95% CI, 0.472-61.752), dan dismenorea (p=0.694) dengan nilai OR 1.400 (95% CI, 0.267- 7.349). Kesimpulan : Sindroma premenstruasi tidak memiliki pengaruh yang signifikan terhadap performa akademik, namun memiliki resiko untuk menurukan performa akademik.
