Abstract

Background: Obesity is a worldwide problem that is facing an increase every year, in 2014 there are more than 1.9 billion adults above 18 years old that are overweight and 650 million of them are categorized as obese. Obesity is one of the factor that could affect lung function beside smoking, this is caused by the excess fat deposition on the abdomen and thorax cavity which in turn pushes the thorax wall and causing a decrease in functional residual capacity. In addition, based on findings on previous researches it is also found that smokers tend to have a bad diet and low activity level which increase their chances of becoming obese. Aim: This research is intended to find if there is a significant correlation between body mass index to lung function on smokers, based on the measurement values on the Forced Vital Capacity (FVC), Forced Expiratory Volume on the first second (FEV1), and the percentage ratio between FEV1 to FVC (FEV1/FVC) on male subjects. Methods: This research will be done using cross sectional method on 120 male smokers. The sampling method is using consecutive sampling based on the inclusion and exclusion criteria to select the subject for data recording. Anamnesis will be done to determine if the subject is a smoker or not, physical measurements will be done to determine the height and weight of the subject, and the lung function will be measured using spirometry. Bivariate analysis will be done to find the correlation and to support the hypothesis. Statistical analysis will be done using P value to determine if the correlation is strong or weak. Results: This study shows that the average BMI for male smokers in Universitas Pelita Harapan is 24.64 kg/m2 which is still within normal limit and majority still have a normal lung function. In addition to that, this study also find that there is no significant correlation between BMI and FEV1/FVC, FVC, and FEV1 on male smokers in Universitas Pelita Harapan / Latar Belakang: Obesitas merupakan masalah global yang semakin tinggi setiap tahunnya, pada tahun 2014 lebih dari 1,9 Miliar orang dewasa diatas 18 tahun memiliki berat badan berlebih dan 650 juta orang di antaranya termasuk obesitas.
