Abstract

Freedom of speech is a human right that everyone should has. Indonesia as a democratic constitutional state should protect the rights of every citizen in freedom of speech. The development of technology makes it easy for us to do freedom of speech, namely with social media. Social media has quickly influenced various aspects of our lives. Many conveniences are obtained, but social media also has a bad impact. The amount of information we get makes it difficult for us to understand and filter the correct information. Elections in 2019 in Indonesia experienced many problems that were dominated by hoax and hate speech in social media. This is because social media users often understand the meaning of freedom of speech solely as protected freedom, without thinking about their obligation not to disturb the freedom of others'. This is the impact of the large flow of social media that causes the unpreparedness of the law and the public to face the flood of information. Therefore the authors feel the need for regulations for social media platforms to filter information available and education is needed early on in the use of social media.
