Abstract

Paving block is widely used in construction however, its materials are not environmentally friendly. One of the efforts to mitigate this issue is by using alternative materials, such as plastic waste and glass waste. The objective of this research is to formulate a paving block mixture using plastic and glass waste. Several tests are conducted for this research. The tests are endurance against potential pollutants (detergent, motor oil, and used cooking oil), compressive strength, water absorption, and Scanning Electron Microscope (SEM). Plastic:sand mixture with 70:30 weight ratio has an average compressive strength of 17,24 MPa. On the other hand, plastic:glass mixture with the same ratio and gradation reach 16,89 MPa with 0,33% water absorption rate. This research found that compressive strength is affected by the variation of glass gradation. Cement:sand mixture with the weight ratio of 70:30 has the average compressive strength of 8,49 MPa. It is about 50% lower than plastic:glass mixture Soaking the sample in detergent and motor oil causes about 60% and 15% decrease in compressive strength respectively. However, cooking oil cause about 14% increase in compressive strength. SEM test shows that the sample soaked in cooking oil has the densest particle structure when compared to the other samples.
