Abstract

Single merupakan kondisi individu yang tidak memiliki pasangan dan belum menikah. Dewasa muda yang single seringkali mendapat stigma negatif maupun tekanan dari lingkungan. Tekanan ini dapat menambah beban tersendiri bagi individu karena dalam tahapan dewasa muda, individu sedang berjuang untuk membangun relasi intim. Intimacy merupakan salah satu aspek dalam membangun relasi intim. Kondisi individu yang tidak dapat membangun intimacy-nya dikenal sebagai fear of intimacy. Salah satu karakteristik individu dengan fear of intimacy yang tinggi adalah individu kurang nyaman berdekatan dengan orang lain. Hal ini berdampak terhadap minimnya interaksi sosial sehingga individu dapat merasakan social and emotional loneliness. Studi ini bertujuan untuk meneliti apakah fear of intimacy memiliki korelasi yang signifikan dengan social and emotional loneliness. Penelitian dilakukan secara kuantitatif dengan menggunakan instrumen penelitian (kuesioner) yang telah diadaptasi kedalam Bahasa Indonesia yaitu Fear of Intimacy Scale dan Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults – Short Version pada 90 dewasa muda yang single. Hasil ini menunjukkan adanya hubungan yang signifikan antara variabel fear of intimacy dan social and emotional loneliness (rp=.439, p<0.05). Artinya semakin tinggi fear of intimacy, maka semakin tinggi pula social and emotional loneliness, dan sebaliknya. Penemuan lain terkait 2 variabel diatas juga dibahas dalam penelitian ini. / Single is a state where a person is not in a romantic relationship and not married. Young adults who are single often get negative stereotype and pressure from society. These pressures added burden to young adults because in this stage, young adults already have a burden to develop intimate relationship. To build intimate relationship, young adults have to develop intimacy. Young adults condition who can not develop their intimacy, called as fear of intimacy. One of the characteristics is a person less comfortable close to people. It can lead to less social interaction and make young adults feel social and emotional loneliness. This study aims to research whether fear of intimacy significantly correlates with social and emotional loneliness. This study is a quantitative study using Fear of Intimacy Scale and Social and Emotional Loneliness Scale for Adults – Short Version (Indonesian adaptation) on ninety young adults who are currently single. Results show that there is a significant relationship between fear of intimacy and social and emotional loneliness (rp=.439, p<0.05). This means that higher fear of intimacy, social and emotional loneliness will be higher too, and vice versa. Other findings related to this two variable will be discussed in this study.
