Abstract

The Rohingya Refugee Crisis in Myanmar has been an ongoing humanitarian crisis since the 1970s with its recent peak in 2015. The continuing humanitarian crisis has not only affected neighboring countries in terms of international borders but also impacted some states to change or create new policies regarding the mass exodus of refugees. Moreover, it also affected the diplomacy and performance of not only Myanmar but also every other country involved in the conflict in the stage of a regional and international organization. This research aims to identify the root causes, origins, objectives, and history of the ongoing conflict that lead to genocidal or ethnic cleansing acts upon the Rohingya ethnic minority group in Rakhine. Furthermore, since the conflict has escalated into a grander scale, this research also aims to identify the roles of international dimensions in internal strife, their responses, and contributions to the conflict whether it is positive or negative impacts. In addition to this, this research applies the generic-in depth method, with a qualitative approach. The concepts used are ethnic conflict, ethnic cleansing, international dimensions in internal conflict, and peace and conflict theory. Results yielded from the research implied that the ongoing crisis is caused by ethnic-conflict due to territorial sovereignty dating back to the colonialization era of the British Empire. Furthermore, as the conflict escalated, it is viewed as the world's humanitarian crisis that has led to many States changing their policies towards hosting refugees.
