Abstract

Synthetic dyes which have dominated in coloring especially in textiles have wastewater with chemical contents that are harmful to humans and the environment. One of the alternatives that is more environmentally friendly and safe to use is natural dye. The sources of natural dyes themselves are also very diverse. However, these days natural dyers are sometimes also still using some heavy metal mordant that is not as safe. The research methods used is material exploration such as aqueous method for extracting the dye and pre, simultaneous, post mordanting for mordanting methods. While the media used is natural fiber fabrics. For a substitute for metal mordant, a natural mordant (bio mordant) is used. The results showed that the colors that produced were very diverse and tended to be subtle. Natural mordant treatment can also help better color absorption of the fabric. One of the products that are suitable as an application of naturally dyed fabric is baby products such as soft toys. The study showed that the best natural mordant treatment is premordanting with salt. While the type of fabric that is the best in absorption and evenness of color is hemp. From the sources used, the skin and avocado seeds, turmeric, and butterfly pea flowers are the best in providing primary colors. In addition, because the materials used are natural, the process and the waste are also safe.
