Abstract

Toraja is well-known for its cultural richness, such as the famous funeral ceremony, the traditional house of Toraja with its unique roof shape, and also the very popular woven fabric with intriguing motifs made with high intricacy. However, Torajanese handcrafted jewelry is one of the lesser-known cultural heritage that has not received much exposure in comparison to the previous items mentioned. Torajanese craftsmen use the backless granulation technique to make the traditional pieces of jewelry, but nowadays the number of jewelry craftsmen in Toraja are decreasing in size. This particular granulation jewelry-making technique has the potential to be used in various jewelry designs. During this process, Torajanese carving patterns are used to reflect the philosophical meanings of daily human life. In addition, this can also be a way to preserve and introduce Torajanese cultural heritage to a wider consumer base and target audience. Research methods such as observation, interviews, questionnaires, experiments, and other data-collecting methods are used to analyze these factors. The experiments resulted on developing an innovation on Torajanese granulation technique. This jewelry design contains a motif combined from three original Torajanese carving patterns and each contains a meaning of its own transformed into a more contemporary design. After several edits and changes, the research resulted in an ethnic contemporary jewelry design which hopefully can help to increase target audience and other people’s appreciation towards Indonesian cultural heritage and locally handcrafted products.
