Abstract

Mapping is a technique developed by Rebecca Payne Shockley for learning and memorizing music efficiently. It can be applied to any kind of instruments, including voice. Based on the book by Shockley, “Mapping Music: For Faster Learning and Secure Memory – A Guide for Piano Teachers and Student,” the Mapping Method can be used at any stage of learning: early level, intermediate level, and advanced level. By Mapping, a musician can gain an overview of a piece one is learning. The Mapping method can be done at the instruments or away from it, however, it depends on the student’s level and complexity of a piece. This research aims to identify how the “Mapping” method by Rebecca Payne Shockley in assisting the classical piano students of UPH Conservatory of Music to memorizing a piece accurately. This study used a pretest posttest design research with a total of five participants from UPH Conservatory of Music, majoring in classical piano. The result of the research shows improvement to all participants in memorizing accurately before and after using the “Mapping” method. The results of this study indicate that the “Mapping” method has brought beneficial effects towards the classical piano students of UPH Conservatory of Music.
