Abstract

In the early 2000s, there were many Japanese expatriates the reside in the Blok M area that resulted a small complex called Little Tokyo that compromises of low-rise commercial buildings such as Japanese restorants, cafes and bars. However, as of now, there are no public spaces in the area that can facilitate social activites and as a result the Japanese community cannot develop. Social sustainability is defined as the relationship between people and the built environment (Woodcraft et al., 2012). This relationship can be developed further with the provision of good public spaces that can facilitate social life and develop a sense of community. Therefore, the purpose of this research is to propose a design of a public space that can be a center for social interactions that is a key factor and role for a solution towards the social problems at hand. This research is done through literature studies to understand the theories regarding to social sustainability, public spaces and its relationship, precedent studies to compare the strategies implemented with the conclusions drawn from the literature studies, site observations to collect the data and information of the existing site, as well as survey that is done collect non-physical information that may be required. The product of this research paper is a proposed design for the Little Tokyo area that implements the criterias of public spaces which compromises of a community center and an upgraded pedestrian walkways. The community center includes the necessary programs that facilitate activities for the community which are workshops, martial arts gym and an amphitheatre. Furthermore, the design of the upgraded pedestrian walkways improves on the quality of street with the use of zonings and design elements such as street furniture. The upgraded pedestrian walkways are designed to help increase the walkability of the streets of the Little Tokyo area.
