Abstract

Small and medium enterprises (SMEs) is the backbone of Indonesia’s economy during crisis. The problem with these SMEs is performance and they are relatively small. In order to increase performance, leadership is needed. The purpose of this study is to find out whether there is a relationship between leadership and performance in small and medium enterprises in Medan. Leadership is an ability driving employees towards certain goal or task. Performance is a concept where organization is able to achieve their goal set by leaders or managers by working effective and efficient and maximizing resources. This research method is descriptive and quantitative. The research is conducted by distributing questionnaires. The population of SMEs in Medan is 89, therefore the sample or respondents needed is 73 calculated using Slovin formula. Data analysis method used is coefficient of correlation. The result of determination test shown that 45.7% leadership affects SMEs performance. The coefficient of correlation shown that there is strong and positive relationship between leadership and performance. This resulted that Ha is accepted meaning there is a relationship between leadership and performance in SMEs in Medan. Lastly, leaders of SMEs should pay more attention in leadership by creating a clear leadership framework, and having individual meeting with employees. As this will help to increase the performance of SMEs. / Usaha kecil dan menengah (UKM) merupakan tulang punggung ekonomoni Indonesia ketika sedang mengalami krisis. Permasalahan yang ada sekarang tentang UKM adalah kinerja dan biasanya kecil. Untuk mengatasi masalah kinerja tersebut dibutuhkan kepemimpinan. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah untuk mengetahui apakah adanya hubungan antara kepemimpinan dan kinerja dalam UKM di Medan. Kepemimpinan adalah sebuah kemampuan dalam menggiring atau mendorong karyawan unutk mencapai sebuah target atau tugas. Kinerja merupakan sebuah konsep dimana sebuah usaha atau organisasi mencapai tujuan yang telah ditentukan oleh pemimpin atau manajer dengan bekerja secara efektif dan efisien dan memaksimalkan sumber daya. Penelitian ini menggunakan penelitian deskriptif dan kuantitatif. Penelitian ini dilakukan dengan membagikan kuisioner. Populasi dari UKM yang ada di Medan adalah 89, sample yang dibutuhkan adalah 73, merupakan hasil yang didapat memalui perhitungan dengan rumus Slovin. Cara menganalisa data menggunakan koefisien korelasi. Hasil uji determinasi menunjukkan kepemimpinan mempengaruhi kinerja UKM sebesar 45.7%. Hasil dari koefisien korelasi membuktikan bahwa ada hubungan yang kuat antara kepemimpinan dan kinerja. Maka Ha diterima dan ada hubungan antara kepemimpinan dan kinerja UKM di Medan Sebagai penutup, pemimpin UKM harus lebih memperhatikan kepemimpinan dengan membuat struktur kepemimpinan yang jelas dan melakukan pertemuan secara individual. Hal tersebut bisa meningkatkan kinerja UKM
