Abstract

Engaging students and helping them to develop knowledge, insights, problem solving skills, self-confidence, self-efficacy, and a passion for learning are common goals that educators bring to the classroom, and interdisciplinary learning promotes realization of these objectives. Interdisciplinary learning allows students to learn by making connections between ideas and concepts across different disciplinary boundaries. Students learning in this way are able to apply the knowledge gained in one discipline to another different discipline as a way to deepen the learning experience. Even though the terminology interdisciplinary has been around since 1920, yet study on interdisciplinary units especially in private schools in Indonesia that offers National Curriculum are still limited. Today, the interdisciplinary unit is a key concept to the advancement of school curriculum at all levels, especially in schools with a progressive education perspective. An advantage of interdisciplinary unit is expanding student understanding and achievement between all disciplines. The objective of this research is to study the effectivity of an Interdisciplinary Unit to deepen students’ understanding of Symbolism, through three disciplines; English Literature, Visual Arts and Music. The subject of this research is the seventh graders of Sekolah Cikal Serpong. This is a classroom action research consisting of three cycles, which covered interdisciplinary planning, collaboration between teachers and an interdisciplinary project as the assessment. The result of this research is that an interdisciplinary unit has a positive effect in developing students’ understanding of the concept of symbolism.
