Abstract

OR 9.7./ Background: The prevalence of otomycosis is found in areas of Tangerang with high temperature and humidity. Cleaning the ear can increase automicosis due to changes in the ear epithelial lining, thereby decreasing cerumen production. Serumen works as an ear protector against fungus and bacteria. Cerumen production in children is more than adults, so adults have a higher risk due to otomycosis. A higher prevalence of otomycosis has been found in elementary school children who have ear cleaning habits, but there is little support for the relationship between ear cleaning habits and an increase in otomycosis in adults with less cerumen production. Purpose: This study aims to understand the association between ear cleaning every day and otomycosis in adult at RSUS. Methodology: This research was conducted in an analytical categorical ‘non- pairs’ with cross sectional method, covering a minimum of 44 adult patients from RSUS with itchiness in ear. This research was done between January and May 2020. The result of the collected data was analysed using Chi Square. Results and conclusion: The prevalence of otomycosis in adult in RSUS is 54.5%. The prevalence of otomycosis in people who frequently clean their ears is 38.6%. There is a significant relationship between ear cleaning and otomycosis with P value 0.001 and OR 9.7.
