Diabetes Melitus (DM) tipe II merupakan penyakit metabolik yang ditandai dengan meningkatnya glukosa dalam darah. Prevalensi diabetes menurut WHO tahun 2012 mencapai 422 juta orang. Pada diabetes melitus tipe II dapat terjadi komplikasi, salah satunya adalah osteoartritis (OA), karena adanya peningkatan produksi dari pro-inflammatory mediator yang menyebabkan peningkatan degradasi tulang rawan sehingga terjadi osteoartritis. Penelitian terdahulu menunjukan adanya hubungan antara DM tipe II selama lebih dari 10 tahun, pada usia diatas 50 tahun dengan kejadian osteoartritis dengan cara mengukur tingkat nyeri menggunakan kuesioner The Australian Canadian Osteoartritis Hand Index (AUSCAN) pain. Namun belum banyak dilaporkan hubungan antara DM tipe II yang diderita selama kurang dari 10 tahun, pada usia 50 - 60 tahun dengan kejadian osteoartritis yang diagnosa menggunakan American College Rheumatology (ACR). / Type II diabetes is a metabolic disease characterized by chronic hyperglycemia.
