Abstract

Sonification is a method which is used for displaying any arbitrary data by using sound as its medium. In this research, the chosen data is original tweets data of #ebola collected from twitter which during some periods of observation was detected extensive. A special attention is given to both positive and negative tweets. The comparison of the results from both categories become the parameters for the sonification. The realization of tweet data sonification makes use parameter mapping method which is based on the frequencies of positive and negative tweets. In this case, positive tweet data is associated with major chord and sinewave waveform as its input signal; while negative tweet data is associated with minor chord and sawtooth waveform as its signal. The implementation is done by using a visual programming languange called Pd (Pure Data). The visual code of Pd is compiled then by using Pd-Extended 0.43.4. Particularly, parameter mapping method involves some processes such as domain data determination, data collection and one-to-one mapping of the data to program. The program for this sonification process is a sequencer with some additive synthesis sound generators. The functional test shows that the sequencer works properly based on the given data. At lower frequency, major chord which is generated from sine wave is not clearly heard. On the other hand, the minor chord which is composed from sawtooth wave dominate the major chord.
