Abstract
Pulse pressure is, independantly, an important indicator for the prognosis of cardiovascular health; pulse pressure is also an important index for arterial stiffness. In the past, pulse pressure is often associated with aging but recent studies have shown that body weight is also a factor. Body weight itself is usually - and universally - categorized into WHO's cut-off for the existing body mass index, which in its own accord was built based on the levels of risks for comorbidities which include cardiovascular risks. And so, this study aims to find out whether there is a correlation between one's body mass index and pulse pressure.
This study uses a cross-sectional design with an unpaired, numerical comparative analyzation method containing 2 groups. The sample consists of 140 undergradute students of Fakultas Kedokteran Universitas Pelita Harapan. The data was collected by measuring the weight, height and blood pressure of 140 undergradute students and is then analyzed non-parametrically using the Mann Whitney U method.
This study found that a Body Mass Index with a value of ≥ 23 kg/m2 has significantly higher pulse pressure value than of a Body Mass Index with a value of < 23 kg/m2 in undergradute medical students of faculty of medicine Universitas Pelita Harapan.
