Abstract

Pada tahun 2006, presiden Meksiko, Felipe Calderon , mendeklarasikan perang terhadap narkoba untuk meningkatkan kesejahteraan negara. Sayangnya, perang ini membawa lebih banyak kekerasan dan masalah ekonomi dalam negeri. Dari berbagai jenis media massa, surat kabar adalah salah satu yang paling disukai oleh masyarakat, yang melaporkan berbagai jenis informasi dalam bingkai berita yang berbeda. Di antara semua surat kabar Meksiko, Koran The News yang telah menjadi koran bahasa Inggris di Meksiko selama lebih dari 60 tahun. Tugas akhir ini bertujuan untuk mencari tahu dan menganalisis frame di dalam koran The News. Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah analisis isi, kualitatif dengan pendekatan framing, dengan menggunakan model yang dikembangkan oleh Robert M. Entman pada 25 item yang terkait dengan perang obat yang sedang berlangsung di Meksiko. Juga, selama pengembangan dari tugas akhir, ada beberapa temuan yang didapatkan melalui beberapa teori komunikasi seperti Agenda-Setting dan Teori Interaksi Simbolik. Hasil penelitian ini telah menunjukkan bahwa frame yang digunakan oleh The News kebanyakan politik dan ekonomi dalam memberitakan berita, tentang Perang Narkoba di Meksiko. / In 2006, Mexico’s president today, Felipe Calderon was elected, declaring a War against Drugs to improve the welfare of the country. Unfortunately, this war brought more violence and economic issues within the country. From the different types of mass media, newspapers are one of the most preferred ones by society, which report many kinds of information in different news frames. Among all Mexican newspapers, The News Newspaper has been the Mexico’s English newspaper for over 60 years. This final project was aimed to find out and analyze news frames within The News newspaper. The method that is used in this research is qualitative content analysis with framing approach, using the model developed by Robert M. Entman on 25 items related with the ongoing Mexican drug war. Also, during the development of this final project, several phenomena were discovered, which were analyzed by some communication theories such as Agenda-Setting and Symbolic Interaction Theory. The result of this research had shown that the frames used by The News are mostly political and economic in delivering the news about Mexico’s Drug War.
