Abstract

Katarak adalah kondisi yang mengaburkan lensa mata dan mengganggu penglihatan yang jelas. Pasien lanjut usia di poli penyakit mata memiliki risiko tinggi memiliki katarak. Namun, belum banyak penelitian di Indonesia yang mencari hubungan antara merokok dan katarak khusus nya pada kaum lansia. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah menganalisa hubungan antara merokok dengan kejadian penyakit katarak pada pasien senilis di Rumah Sakit Umum Siloam. Penelitian ini mengunakan metode case-control yang dilakukan pada 58 pasien poli mata yang berusia lebih dari 50 tahun. Riwayat merokok akan dinilai menggunakan kuesioner berdasarkan Indeks Brinkman. Uji statistik menggunakan uji Chi Square. Dari 58 sampel kasus, didapati jumlah pasien katarak yang merokok sebanyak 25 orang (92.6%) sedangkan katarak pada pasien yang tidak merokok hanya sebanyak 4 orang (12.9%). Perokok memiliki risiko 84,4 kali lebih besar untuk terkena katarak dibandingkan dengan yang bukan perokok. Ditemukan hubungan yang signifikan antara merokok dan katarak, khususnya pada pasien lanjut usia. / Cataract is a condition that obscures the eyes and disturbs vision. Older patients in ophthalmology room are in high risk of getting cataracts which is mediated by smoking. However, not many studies from Indonesia have looked for a link between smoking and cataracts. The aim of this study is to analyze the relationship between smoking and the incidence of cataracts in senile patients in Rumah Sakit Umum Siloam. This study used a case-control method which was conducted on 58 eyeclinic patients aged over 50 years. Smoking history was assessed using a questionnaire based on the Brinkman Index. Bivariate analysis was done using the Chi Square test. Of the 58 case samples, it was found that there were 25 cataract patients who smoked (92.6%) leaving only 4 (12.9%) cataract patients who were non-smokers. Smokers have an 84.4 times greater risk of developing cataracts than nonsmokers. A significant association was found between smoking and cataracts, particularly in elderly patients.
