Abstract

Yang menjadi rumusan masalah dalam penelitian ini adalah: Bagaimana proses keterbukaan diri dalam berkomunikasi dengan pasangan jarak jauh yang berbeda negara? Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah fenomenologi dengan pendekatan kualitatif melalui wawancara mendalam dengan sepuluh informan. Model analisis data dalam penelitian ini mengikuti konsep yang diberikan Miles dan Huberman (1992). Teori yang digunakan untuk analisis data adalah Teori Keterbukaan Diri (Altman & Taylor, 1973), yang mengatakan bahwa keterbukaan diri itu melalui lima proses yaitu: Inisiasi, Eksperimen, Intensifikasi, Integrasi dan Ikatan. Hasil dari penelitian ini menunjukkan bahwa semua informan mengakui bahwa dengan adanya jarak jauh, mereka menjadi lebih sulit untuk menceritakan atau berbagai mengenai hal-hal yang bersifat pribadi. Keterbukaan dalam berkomunikasi itu tetap ada, akan tetapi berbeda dengan pada saat mereka samasama menjalin hubungan saat berada di kota yang sama. Kesimpulan yang diambil adalah semua pasangan melalui kelima tahap keterbukaan dalam berkomunikasi. Akan tetapi, kesepuluh informan mengakui bahwa adanya jarak yang memisahkan mereka dan adanya perbedaan waktu menghambat keterbukaan mereka dalam berkomunikasi. / The research question that this study seeks to answer is the process of self disclosure in communication among long distance relationship couples. The method used in this research is qualitative phenomenology through indepth interviews with 10 informants. This research follows Huberman and Miles’ (1992) analysis model. The theory used for analysis is the Self Disclosure theory (Altman & Taylor, 1973), which states that the process of self disclosure goes through five steps: Initiation, Experiments, Intensification, Integration and Ties. Results show that all informants admit that the long distance makes it more difficult to share and narrate personal things to each other. Openness in communication still remains. However, this is different from when they lived in the same town. In conclusion, all couples go through the five stages of self disclosure in communicating. However, the informants acknowledge that the distance impedes their openness in communicating.
