Abstract

Economic inequality still becomes the main global challenge that requires high attention from governments and international organizations. In the globalization and open market era, developing countries oftentimes are not able to cope with the development which results in a greater gap. Liberalists believe that this global challenge can only be addressed with active cooperation between various actors, including humanitarian organizations. Christianity, as the biggest religious group in the world, shows their contribution through the presence of churches and Christian humanitarian organizations in helping poor communities. Wahana Visi Indonesia, as the Indonesia’s national office of World Vision International, be present to support the society well-being, especially focusing on children’s quality of life. This thesis explains how Wahana Visi Indonesia, as a Christian humanitarian organization, helps Indonesian rural society different from other humanitarian organizations in the perspective of transformational development. Transformational development is one of developmental theories that highlights various aspects of human’s life holistically in the empowerment activities. The analysis will be explained through case study research method on Cultural Revitalization in Alor, NTT in qualitative approach. Specific concepts included in this thesis are global development, faith-based humanitarian organization, and transformational development. The result of case analysis in this thesis shows that transformational development approach that works by solving the root cause holistically from spiritual, physical, social, and cultural aspect can contribute to the reduction of material poverty in the community. This proves the importance of development goals that are not just focusing on economic growth, but also the reconciliation of relationship that ensures the quality of life and society’s capabilities. / Kesenjangan ekonomi masih menjadi masalah global utama yang terus menarik perhatian para pemerintah dan organisasi internasional. Di tengah era globalisasi dan terbukanya akses perdagangan antar negara, negara-negara berkembang seringkali tidak mampu menyesuaikan diri dengan perkembangan yang ada sehingga kesenjangan tersebut semakin besar. Menurut pandangan liberalisme, masalah global seperti ini harus diatasi dengan kerja sama aktif dari berbagai aktor, termasuk organisasi kemanusiaan. Kristen sebagai kelompok agama terbesar di dunia pun menunjukan keterlibatannya melalui peran gereja dan organisasi kemanusiaan berbasis nilai Kristen dalam membantu masyarakat miskin. Wahana Visi Indonesia yang merupakan mitra utama World Vision International hadir di Indonesia untuk mewujudkan masyarakat yang hidup utuh khususnya melalui kualitas hidup anak. Skripsi ini menjelaskan bagaimana Wahana Visi Indonesia sebagai organisasi kemanusiaan Kristen melakukan misinya berbeda dari organisasi kemanusiaan lain yang dilihat dengan sudut pandang pembangunan transformasional. Pembangunan transformasional adalah salah satu teori pembangunan yang mengedepankan seluruh aspek kehidupan secara holistik dalam memberdayakan masyarakat. Analisis akan dipaparkan melalui metode penelitian studi kasus pada program Revitalisasi Budaya di Alor, NTT secara kualitatif. Konsep yang akan digunakan adalah pembangunan global, organisasi kemanusiaan berbasis iman, dan pembangunan transformasional. Hasil analisis dari studi kasus dalam skripsi ini menunjukan bahwa metode pembangunan transformasional yang menyelesaikan akar permasalahan secara holistik baik secara spiritual, fisik, sosial, dan kultural dapat mengurangi kemiskinan ekonomi di masyarakat. Hal ini menunjukan pentingnya fokus program pembangunan yang bukan hanya terbatas pada angka pertumbuhan ekonomi, tetapi juga pulihnya relasi yang menjamin kualitas hidup dan kapabilitas manusia.
