Abstract

The quick development of digital technology over the past few decades has had a global impact on all industries, including the media industry. Suara Timor Lorosae (STL), the oldest media in Timor Leste, is one of the many media that have not escaped the challenges of the advent of the digital era and new network-based media platforms. Advances in communication and information technology have had a major impact in all aspects of information distribution. The public is no longer just receiving information but demands not only information that is easily accessible, comprehensive, fast and instantaneous (real time), but also their involvement in sharing information. Currently, what STL has to face is how to maintain and develop it’s existence in the digital era, considering the massive information technology today. This is what attracts the attention of researcher, because there is no study that specifically addresses the experience of a media in Timor Leste. This research uses ethnographic qualitative research methods. Research data collection was carried out with primary data, namely interviews and participant observation, secondary data is literature review and documentation. Interviews were conducted with staff, journalists, and internal leaders of STL and people from various fields or backgrounds. The results show that STL uses strategies to maintain it’s existence in the current digital era, including using social media platforms for promotion, rebuilding the online platform (website/online news), creating applications via Google Play, and creating new types of businesses outside the media itself in order to get new revenue streams.
