Abstract

Film has the powerful ability to captivate the world with meaningful messages, controversial issues, escalate interest and expand our knowledge. Subsequently, the messages and portrayals that films convey effect the perceptions and opinions of its viewers. When it comes to messages concerning certain societal issues such as homosexuality, it is no exception. The amount of coverage homosexuality has received before and after the reform era differs, which is largely due to the changes within time. This research aims to study the representations of homosexuality in film before and after the reform era and how this can be reflected and related to the Indonesian society within these times. The research uses Roland Barthe’s semiotic analysis to analyze two films; Istana Kecantikan (1988) and Arisan! (2003). Denotation, connotation, myth, and social codes are applied to the scenes selected from both films in order to understand how homosexuality is represented. In addition, the representation of homosexuality is analyzed using the Symbolic Interaction Theory. Based on the research results, representations in film before and after the Reform Era differ highly. Istana Kecantikan has high negative connotations of homosexual representations while Arisan! has much more positive themes and representations of homosexuality. It is also noted that representations in Istana Kecantikan can be said as a reflection while Arisan! is a construction of how homosexuality was viewed and perceived during those periods, respectively. Changes in the media industry, film industry, and the Indonesian Film Censorship all played a part in the end result of these representations. / Film memiliki kemampuan yang kuat untuk memikat dunia dengan pesan yang bermakna, isu-isu kontroversial, meningkatkan minat dan memperluas pengetahuan kita. Selanjutnya, pesan dan penggambaran yang disampaikan oleh film mempengaruhi persepsi dan opini pemirsa, tak terkecuali pesan-pesan mengenai masalah sosial tertentu seperti halnya homoseksualitas. Jumlah cakupan homoseksualitas sebelum dan setelah era reformasi berbeda, yang sebagian besar disebabkan oleh perubahan waktu. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mempelajari keterwakilan homoseksualitas dalam film sebelum dan sesudah era reformasi dan bagaimana hal ini bisa mencerminkan dan bisa dihubungkan dengan masyarakat Indonesia pada masa itu. Penelitian ini menggunakan analisis semiotik Roland Barthes untuk menganalisa dua film, Istana Kecantikan (1988) dan Arisan! (2003). Kode denotatif, konotatif, mitos, dan sosial diterapkan pada adegan-adegan yang dipilih dari kedua film untuk memahami bagaimana homoseksualitas digambarkan. Selain itu, representasi homoseksualitas dianalisis dengan menggunakan Teori Interaksi Simbolik. Berdasarkan hasil penelitian, representasi homoseksual dalam film sebelum dan sesudah Era Reformasi sangat berbeda. Istana Kecantikan memiliki konotasi yang sangat negatif sementara dalam film Arisan! keterwakilan homoseksual memiliki tema yang jauh lebih positif. Patut juga dicatat bahwa keterwakilan di Istana Kecantikan dapat dikatakan sebagai refleksi sementara di Arisan! adalah sebuah konstruksi bagaimana homoseksualitas dilihat dan dianggap dalam masing-masing periode. Perubahan dalam industri media, industri film, dan Badan Sensor Film Indonesia, semua memainkan peran dalam hasil akhir dari keterwakilan masingmasing film.
