Abstract

Based on the school‟s observation, specifically in one of the classes in grade 2, it was found that most of the students have a difficulty in learning Mathematics especially multiplication. It is due to lack of guided practice, the chance for the students to ask questions, and learning methods that are used in the classroom. These led the students to poor achievement. Therefore, as the researcher started to teach the materials about multiplication strategy in Mathematics subject, the researcher decided to use peer tutoring as the method for the students to learn in the classroom and to improve students‟ cognitive achievement. The problems addressed in this research are, “Can peer tutoring improve students‟ cognitive achievement in the topic of Mathematics?” and “How can peer tutoring improve students‟ cognitive achievement in the topic of Mathematics?” The method used in this research was a Classroom Action Research (CAR) using Kemmis and McTaggart spiral model which consisted of two cycles, with 17 students involved, in an XYZ school. The instruments used to collect the data were test, rubric, student‟s reflection checklist, mentor‟s observation checklist and feedback, mentor‟s feedback, grade 2 teacher‟s observation checklist and the researcher‟s reflective journal. Research findings shown from these instruments were student‟s cognitive achievement was improved through the implementation of peer tutoring method which consists three stages (Planning, Implementation, and Evaluation). Therefore it can be concluded that the implementation of peer tutoring method is effective to improve students‟ cognitive achievement./Berdasarkan pengamatan di sekolah, khususnya di salah satu kelas 2 SD, ditemukan bahwa sebagian besar siswa menemukan kesulitan dalam belajar Matematika terutama tentang perkalian. Hal ini terjadi karena kurangnya latihan terarah yang diberikan bagi siswa, kesempatan bagi siswa untuk mengajukan pertanyaan, dan metode pembelajaran yang tidak varian yang digunakan di dalam kelas. Hal ini menyebabkan siswa berprestasi rendah. Oleh karena itu, ketika peneliti mulai mengajar tentang strategi perkalian dalam subyek Matematika, peneliti memutuskan untuk menggunakan tutor teman sebaya sebagai salah satu metode untuk siswa belajar di kelas dan meningkatkan prestasi kognitif siswa. Rumusan masalah penelitian ini adalah, "Dapatkah tutor teman sebaya meningkatkan prestasi kognitif siswa dalam pelajaran Matematika?" dan "Bagaimana bisa tutor teman sebaya meningkatkan prestasi kognitif siswa dalam pelajaran Matematika?" Metode yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Penelitian Tindakan Kelas (PTK) dengan menggunakan model spiral oleh Kemmis dan McTaggart yang terdiri dari dua siklus, dengan jumlah 17 siswa yang terlibat, dan berlangsung di sekolah XYZ. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah lembar kerja siswa (tes), rubrik, daftar cocok siswa, daftar cocok dan umpan balik oleh mentor, daftar cocok dari guru kelas 2, pengamatan peneliti dan jurnal reflektif peneliti. Hasil penelitian dari instrumen diatas menunjukkan bahwa prestasi belajar siswa tentang pelajaran yang disampaikan telah meningkat melalui penerapan metode tutor teman sebaya yang didalamnya terdiri dari tiga tahapan (Perencanaan, Implementasi, dan Evaluasi). Oleh karena itu dapat disimpulkan bahwa penerapan metode tutor teman sebaya efektif untuk meningkatkan prestasi kognitif siswa.
