Abstract

Perkembangan Internet dari web 1.0 menjadi 2.0 memberi kesempatan bagi proses komunikasi langsung yang dapat dilakukan tanpa harus bertatap muka. Salah satu cara berkomunikasi dengan menggunakan Internet adalah melalui jejaring sosial. Setiap individu memiliki kesempatan untuk merepresentasikan dirinya tidak hanya dalam kehidupan nyata melainkan juga dalam jejaring sosial, dalam hal ini Facebook. Melalui akun Facebook, setiap orang dapat merepresentasikan dirinya didorong oleh motivasi tertentu dengan menggunakan taktik yang sesuai. Penelitian ini ingin melihat bagaimana self presentation oleh mahasiswa semester delapan jurusan public relations di London School of Public Relations dalam jejaring sosial Facebok. Konsep yang digunakan dalam penelitian ini adalah Computer Mediated Communication dan Self Presentation. Pendekatan dalam penelitian ini adalah kualitatif dengan metode penelitian fenomenologi. Teknik pengumpulan data dengan observasi dan wawancara mendalam yang dilakukan kepada tujuh mahasiswa semester delapan jurusan public relations di LSPR yang nantinya akan bekerja dalam bidang public relations. Hasil penelitian ini menunjukan bahwa motivasi mahasiswa melakukan self presentation karena mulai menyadari bahwa informasi yang dicantumkan dalam Facebook memiliki dampak bagi orang yang melihat sehingga mempengaruhi interaksi mereka dalam Facebook mengingat mahasiswa semester delapan akan segera memasuki dunia pekerjaan. Taktik yang paling banyak dilakukan adalah attributive tactics dan conformity dan compliance. / The development of the Internet from web 1.0 to web 2.0 gives the opportunity for the direct communication process to be done without having to meet face to face. One of the many ways to communicate in the Internet is through the social networking sites. Every individual have the opportunity to represent themselves not only in real life but also in the social networking sites, in this case Facebook. Through the Facebook accounts, users can represent themselves according to certain motivations that they own. This study want to see how the senior students in London School of Public Relations that are majoring public relations do the self-presentation through their Facebook accounts. Concepts used in this study are Computer Mediated Communication and Self Presentation. The approach in this study is a qualitative research with the method of phenomenology. Techniques of observation and data collecting conducted with in-depth interview with the seven senior public relations students of LSPR that are planning to work in the field of public relations. The results indicate that the students present themselves because they begin to realize that the information they put in their Facebook account have certain impacts on people who see their profiles that affect their interaction in Facebook, considering they will soon be graduated and find themselves a job. The strategies that used by the students mostly are attributive, conformity, and compliance strategies.
