Abstract

Penelitian ini dilaksanakan berdasarkan hasil observasi pada tingkat 3.1 kelas language SD XYZ. Hasil observasi menunjukkan adanya satu masalah yaitu kesulitan memahami bacaan. Siswa tidak dapat menjawab pertanyaan berdasarkan bacaan yang diberikan oleh guru. Siswa juga kesulitan dalam menceritakan kembali isi bacaan dengan bahasa sendiri. Masalah di atas melatarbelakangi penelitian ini. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk mendeskripsikan kesulitan memahami bacaan siswa dan menemukan faktor-faktor yang menyebabkan siswa kesulitan memahami bacaan. Untuk meneliti masalah ini peneliti menggunakan model penelitian kualitatif deskriptif dengan analisis data model Miles dan Huberman. Penelitian ini dilaksanakan dari tanggal 22 Agustus–3 November 2016. Instrumen yang digunakan untuk mengumpulkan data adalah wawancara, observasi, dan hasil tes. Subjek penelitian ini adalah lima partisipan siswa serta satu guru dari tingkat 3.1. Hasil analisis data menunjukkan bahwa kesulitan memahami bacaan yang dihadapi siswa dalam membaca adalah siswa sulit menjawab pertanyaan yang diberikan setelah membaca bahan bacaan dan sulit menceritakan kembali isi bacaan dengan bahasa sendiri. Kesulitan memahami bacaan disebabkan oleh faktor pembelajaran dimana guru belum menerapkan tahap-tahap dalam pembelajaran membaca. Selain itu, tingkat kemudahan, tingkat kemenarikan, dan keterpahaman bahan bacaan dapat juga menyebabkan kesulitan memahami bacaan. Maka dari itu, dalam melaksanakan pembelajaran membaca guru harus menerapkan semua tahapan penting dalam pembelajaran membaca serta memilih bahan bacaan yang sesuai dengan level siswa./This Research was conducted based on the observation in language class level 3.1 of SD XYZ. The result of the observation showed that there was a reading comprehension related problem. Students failed to answer the reading comprehension questions based on the text given by the teacher. Students were also having difficulties in retelling the content of the text with their own words. This problem was the reason why the researcher conducted this research. The purpose of this research was to describe the difficulties that students have in reading comprehension and find the factors causing this. This research employed a descriptive qualitative model of research with Miles and Huberman data analysis model. It was conducted on August 22th – November 3rd 2016. The instruments used for this research are interview, observation, and test results. The research subjects were five students and one teacher from level 3.1. The data analysis showed that student’s reading comprehension difficulties are that students were not able to answer the questions given and to retell the content with their own words. The difficulties were mainly caused by teaching and learning process, in which the teacher had not applied all important steps in teaching reading. In addition to that, the text readability such as how interesting a text is and how easy it is to undetstand can influence student’s ability in comprehending a text. This research, therefore, suggests that teachers should apply all important steps in teaching reading and choose a reading text appropriate to the level of students.
