Abstract
Throughout the development of communication technology that has a crucial role in today’s society, forms of media have been expanding worldwide. Specifically for South Korea with its advanced entertainment industry, mass productions of fictional stories that resonate with the targeted audience are displayed through mass communication media, such as films, as a tool to represent cultures. This research uses the qualitative approach. Data collection is carried out through documentation obtained from scenes in “Parasite” (2019) film, and literature analysis from articles, journals, books and other online sources. Data analysis is then conducted through the use of Roland Barthes’ semiotics theory and satire techniques. The result of this research provides the knowledge and understanding of social satire presented throughout the storyline of the film. The social reality of the stratified classes struggles in capitalist culture that exists in South Korea is indirectly critiqued by the director and screenwriter Bong Joon-ho, through the verbal and non-verbal cues portrayed¬ in such exaggerated, contrasting, and ironic ways.
