The issuance of the Governmental Regulation Number 51 Year 2007 regarding Geographical Indications as an elaboration of the regulations on geographical indications as stated in Chapter VII of the Law Number 15 Year 2001 regarding Trademark is a step of policy conducted by Indonesian Government to overcome the widespread of unfair competition in the business world. The object of protection for geographical indications are products that its characteristics and quality were affected by the nature factor, human factor, or combination of both factors from the product's place of origin. Yet, lack of socialization on the geographical indications protection has become an obstacle in the registration process especially for handicraft products because the relationship between handicraft product and its place of origin is generally not concrete and unmeasurable. Based on the consideration, a research is conducted in order to deepen the conception of regulating and implementing the geographical indications protection, especially those related to handicraft products as an object with potential to get geographical indications protection. This research is using normative legal research by analyzing the prevailing laws and regulations in Indonesia. The conclusion of the research is that the definition of geographical indication as stated in the Governmental Regulation Number 51 Year 2007 regarding Geographical Indication has provided substantial requirements for the registration of geographical indication product, including handicraft product such as mebel ukir Jepara and batik Surakarta.
