Abstract

With a diverse background of the population, the city requires the presence of urban design that can meet the various needs of the community. The cities design in Jakarta has been prioritizing of the malls development as closed mall so that an open public space becomes limited. Open public space like plaza at the mall became important element in the mall design to meet the needs of society. According to the phenomenon, it is necessary to control attitudes toward public spaces. Common public space we can find in the city now are roads, parks, squares, hall, market, malls, etc. city walk can be an alternative for the urban open space. City walk concept emergered to answering the need of comfortable and safety open space in the city as well as the urban life style within this research, I will discuss and analyze the city walk characteristics that are being implemented in many city shopping centers. The analysis will be based on the theory from literature studies, continue with the field trip from several shopping centers. City walk’s application can be achieved as well if the criteria are met in architecturally as a open public space These include strategic location, easy accessibility, open pedestrian with approximately 5-10 meters wide which has a relation between indoor and outdoor space. Distance of pedestrian approximately 500 m. The use of ramps to facilitate pedestrians. Material pedestrian are bricks, rocks, asphalt, etc and natural elements such as vegetation, water that provide comfort on pedestrian.
