Abstract

Film firstly got in to Batavia (now Jakarta), in 1900s, that usually called as ‘gambar idoep’ in that era. In 1920s to 1940s, some cinemas popped in Jakarta. However, it is unfortunate that nearly none of these cinemas remain because they couldn’t keep up with the modernization. One of these old cinemas that remained by operating the old screening system and still using the old building is Grand Theater Senen. This old cinema is one of the examples of the building that has a decreased function because the administrator still using celluloid film, which actually rarely used in this era because it cost more that the digital film that usually used in modern cinema. Moreover, the changing social factor also affects the old cinema. At first, cinema was the main entertainment for people and also used to show prestige. But then, when other entertainment showed up, it began to be left behind. One strategy that can be adapted to preserve this old cinema is by analyzing the potency of the building that can be developed further by re-using it. This strategy usually called as Adaptive Re-use, which is one example of strategies to conserve an old building by combining the old and the new use. When injecting a new use to the building, it will cause some changes to the building. So adding a new use to the old building become crucial because when the new use, that have been chosen and injected, is not in accordance with the old building then it will make a false sense of historical character of the building. Based on site analysis and precedent study, one of the new use that added to Grand Theater Senen is gallery that tells about the history of the film projection tools. The other new uses are the new cinema and as well as the complementary functions that are usually found in the modern cinema (cafes, bars, and open-air cinema). After going through the design process, the conclusion of the application of adaptive re-use strategies that compatible for Grand Theater Senen is weaving and juxtaposition strategy
