Abstract
The population density in Jakarta has increase each year, therefore the government has to create space with the designations for residential to accommodate the increase of population density. In order to save space, all the development of new residential shall in high-rise or vertical residential, for example flats. Although the development of flats are already applied in Jakarta and several other big cities in Indonesia, in practical it still needs to be learned on how to build flats that are efficient and suitable for the Indonesian society, mainly in the visual achievement of comfort through natural lighting system, with the result of lessening the building energy load. Influence of the design method which aims for the application of natural lighting system is a potential which can be very useful and appropriate particularly on flats for energy and cost saving. Overhang system is one of the method in producing the sun shadow area to prevent dazzle and hot conditions which can be receive from sunlight as the source of natural lighting. In relation with the sky condition and Indonesia’s environment which is humid tropics therefore the method used to analyze the distributions of natural lighting using illuminance value and daylight factor (DF) to see the performance of residential space through the phenomenon of natural lighting using Autodesk Ecotect Analysis 2011 program. The problem occur in the use of dimension, material, orientation openings, overhang in flats. The results of the analysis showed that the orientation of the building extends towards the west and east, the natural lighting systems is influenced by large openings. Therefore, large openings and determination of overhang in accordance with the environmental conditions and the direction of the sun becomes a major requirement for the overhang to function optimally. In the humid tropical climate in Jakarta utilization high openings with light self is the right solution to address the problem of natural lighting.
