Abstract

Affordances which according to Gibson (1979) refer to the functionally significant properties of the environment, what it offers and how people translate into activities, outdoor neighborhood offers function for use of children’s play, where the characteristic of play are, as voluntary activities, have it own rules and consciousness that play is different with everyday world. Play in outdoor neighborhood push its limit of potential function of the environment. The characteristic of outdoor that perceptible for children’s play are focus for this research. This research is carried out by observation in the study area with the environment as research object, seen by its archetype, and children who play as a research subject. The analysis carried out at the level of affordance held each archetype of open spaces. There are three levels of affordance, perceived, utilized, and shaped affordance. The result of this classification in the form of group of play activities encountered in the object of study. The findings of this study are different characteristics of open space at the two study sites. The availability of open spaces and play different forms of activity affected by the archetype of existing open space. Multiple affordance of open spaces arise due to the intervention of other objects carried by children for play activities. Outdoor play has many benefits in children development.
