Abstract

Congestion of traffic in Jakarta is the result of poor mass distribution. The state of congestion is an unfavorable circumstance that disadvantages the public and creates inefficient use of the public realm. Existing high capacity public transit systems and HOV have not yet been able to tackle the problems. The construction of a mass rapid transit (MRT) is seen as an answer by the government, although there are reasons to doubt if this will be effective. The reasons include the government’s experience in commuter lines and Transjakarta bus routes, the uncontrollable growth of satellite cities into independent urban centers, and the city of Jakarta’s already well-known dispersion of economic activity. The design aspect will come in the form of a central terminal (CT) that offers intermodality, as well as alternative programs in order to better distribute mass and elongate dwell time beyond the known rush hours. The planned terminal is valued as a priority because within the studied precedents, every foreign country with a working public transit system has within it a central terminal or station. Analysis methods to identify the position, scale, and breadth of programming include correlational, qualitative research, case stuies, and logical argumentation. Property values around node station determine the effectiveness of the current commuter lines. Identifying how Jakarta’s citizens use the 8 districts in and around Jakarta address the breadth of programming in the CT. The CT is designed with the assumption that it must have a ripple effect upon shareholders and a snowball effect on stakeholders.
