Abstract

Sustainable construction development needs a good environmental management system. International standard ISO 14000 is one of the standards of a good environmental management system. The objective of this thesis is to obtain general idea of implementation ISO 14000 in civil construction work. Awareness for environmental management within the construction industry is increasing. As a matter of fact that the adoption of environmental management in construction has been somewhat slow relative to its adoption in other industrial sectors. The Alternative Fuel project is one of the project that was developed by Departemen Civil Construction-GECD in PT.ITP. Since 2002 PT.ITP has adopted ISO 14001 therefore in every aspect inside this company including the construction process of Alternative Fuel project must implement this standard and the third parties that involve in this project have to comply with this standard. There are always extensive environmental effects at the project workplace. From the data analysis, it was shown that Environmental Management System facilitates all the processes but it is not intended to be used to create the final result. The construction of a project is a process. With implementing ISO 14001, all the on going processes from planning until the handover process to the owner are carefullly managed thus in every aspect of work must towards the fullfillment of the legal regulation, environmental standard and the specified requirements of the project.
