Abstract

The upcoming ASEAN Community 2015, had made me interested in reviewing one of the community pillars, which is the Economic pillar. The economic pillar is an extension of the ongoing regional economic integration that already begins since 1992 when AFTA was created. Using some accomplishments from AFTA, ASEAN accelerate the creation of the ASEAN community from the year 2020 to 2015. The aim of this community is to make the ASEAN region as an International Single Market and Production Base Regions that have high competitiveness, Equity Region Economic Development and means to compete with larger Global Economy. Based on this background there are several questions that this thesis wanted to answer: First, how prepared is Indonesia in facing the ASEAN Economic Community 2015? Second, what kind of preparations that Indonesia has done for the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community 2015? Third, what are Indonesia’s achievements in relations with the upcoming ASEAN Economic Community in 2015? Those are the questions that this thesis wanted to answer. To answer those questions, qualitative method is used to search for the data and information. The collection of data or information are based on what already available from first or second hand data. The data will then be processed, so it can be used to analyze and answer the research questions. The theory used for the analytical framework is liberalism theory, a theory that believes in cooperation as the key to achieve economic prosperity and stability. The theory is in accordance with the purpose of ASEAN which among others are to create peace, increase economic growth, regional stability and mutual cooperation between the members countries involved. The focus of this study are to look at Indonesia’s readiness indicators in infrastructure improvements (roads, bridges, information, irrigation, and settlement), elimination of trade barriers, factors of production (natural resources, labor, capital, expertise), and the SME’s (Small, Medium Enterprises) development The findings from some of these indicators shows the preparation are still not quite optimal. The main cause for these unpreparedness is complex domestic problems such as lack of finances, labor, and many more. However, there are also some strategies and achievements that Indonesia already have to help the nation to be fully prepared in time for the accelerated timeline of ASEAN Economic Community implementation in 2015.
