Abstract
Objectivity is core and unchangeable standard in journalism. In order to understand this abstract concept, objectivity in journalism, researchers conceptualize objectivity with related concepts, fact, truth, relevance, balance, fairness, neutrality and so on. Through conceptualize and operationalize process, objectivity in articles can be measured. This paper also aims to examine objectivity in media contents. Contents analyzed in this research are articles from two online newspapers, The New York Times (nytimes.com) and The Korea Times (koreatimes.co.kr). Articles are sampled with subject of ‘Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronic Ltd.’s new moves in technology field.’ Apple Inc. and Samsung Electronic Ltd. have been covered in competitive relation by media after patent dispute between them in 2011. After patent case in several countries two companies have been making new waves in technology field especially in smartphone market. In every their moves, media compare two companies each other and how media cover the issue has potential impact on audience’s consumption. The research use quantitative content analysis method to measure objectivity in the articles. As previous steps, core concept of the research, objectivity is conceptualize in six related concepts, Accuracy, Truth, Balance, Neutrality, No Misleading and Thoroughness and operationalized based on them. As the results, 66.7% of articles in the online New York Times, nytimes.com have objectivity in reporting contents, and get average scores 3.685 out of 5 in measurement objectivity. In case of The Korea Times, koreatimes.co.kr, 57.4% of articles cover stories with objectivity and get average scores 3.618 points.
