Abstract
It is possible to enhance children’s critical thinking skills as early as threeyear-old who are in Piagetian stage, pre operational. By having them, a
preschooler will have better school readiness for his academic success in the
future. Furthermore, practice in this golden age period, will help the skills to be
fully developed. This classrom action research aims to analyse the use of Book
Talk to enhance critical thinking and expressive communication skills of
preschoolers aged 3-4 years old in Nursery Rainbow class, Sekolah Victory Plus.
The Book Talk method is a discussion after storytelling to talk about a picture
book. Picture books and storytelling are chosen because of the familiarity that
preschoolers have with them. Result of this research is in general students’ both
skills have improved after the intervention, although there is a student whose
critical thinking skills have decreased after intervention; thus Book Talk is not for
all types of learners. / Tren pembelajaran abad ke-21 mengusung beberapa keterampilan yang perlu
dikembangkan, salah satunya adalah berpikir kritis. Tujuan penelitian ini adalah
untuk menganalisis penggunaan metode Book Talk dalam rangka menumbuhkan
keterampilan berpikir kritis dan berkomunikasi ekspresif verbal siswa usia 3-4
tahun dengan menggunakan buku cerita berbahasa Indonesia bertema hewan.
Metode Book Talk merupakan salah satu bentuk pembacaan cerita secara
interaktif di mana para peserta berdialog mengenai isi cerita dan ilustrasi buku
cerita bergambar yang dibacakan. Penelitian Tindakan Kelas ini dilakukan di
kelas Nursery Rainbow sekolah Victory Plus Bekasi dengan jumlah subjek
penelitian 14 siswa, 5 laki-laki dan 9 perempuan. Pengambilan data dilakukan
dalam 3 siklus yang dilakukan pada Mei 2018. Hasil penelitian ini berupa
meningkatnya keterampilan berpikir kritis dan berkomunikasi ekspresif verbal
siswa pada umumnya. Meskipun demikian, ditemukan juga bahwa Book Talk
kurang cocok untuk beberapa tipe siswa tertentu sehingga terdapat penurunan
pencapaian.
