Abstract

Feminism is a form of breaking down by women on the rules that bind it. These rules are a long-standing patriarchal system among the people. Coco Before Chanel is a documentary film of the drama biography by Anne Fountain. The film tells the story of the life of a French woman named Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel who works as a famous designer. In this film Chanel is positioned as a woman who fights in gender equality. Based on the above background, the formulation of this thesis problem is how the representation of feminism in the movie Coco Before Chanel is viewed from the position of subject-object, reader position and media position. This research uses a critical paradigm with qualitative approach and Sara mills analysis method. Meanwhile, the data obtained in the form of primary data which is an interview with key informant and non-participant observation. In addition there are secondary data in the form of literature study and documentation. Interviews were conducted to informants about the Coco Before Chanel film. The results show that through the film Coco Before Chanel, women are not only positioned as objects but also as subjects in representing feminism. / Feminisme merupakan suatu bentuk pendobrakan oleh wanita pada aturan – aturan yang mengikatnya. Aturan – aturan tersebut merupakan sistem patriarki yang sudah lama berkembang dikalangan masyarakat. Coco Before Chanel merupakan film dokumenter yang bergenre drama biografi karya Anne Fountain. Film ini menceritakan kisah kehidupan seorang perempuan asal Perancis bernama Gabrielle Bonheur Chanel yang berprofesi sebagai desainer terkenal. Dalam film ini Chanel diposisikan sebagai perempuan yang berjuang dalam kesetaraan gender. Berdasarkan latar belakang diatas, rumusan masalah tesis ini adalah bagaimana representasi feminisme dalam film Coco Before Chanel dipandang dari posisi subjek-objek, posisi pembaca dan posisi media. Penelitian ini menggunakan paradigma kritis dengan pendekatan kualitatif dan metode analisis Sara mills. Sementara itu data-data yang didapat berupa data primer yang merupakan wawancara dengan para key informant dan observasi nonpartisipan. Selain itu terdapat data sekunder berupa studi kepustakaan dan dokumentasi. Wawancara dilakukan kepada para informan mengenai film Coco Before Chanel. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa melalui film Coco Before Chanel, perempuan tidak hanya diposisikan sebagai objek namun juga sebagai subjek dalam merepresentasikan feminisme.
