Meaning in life is a fundamental human need that is influenced by individual and cultural differences. Meaning in life correlates with many wellbeing indices, but research on the area is scarce in an Indonesian context and results from other countries cannot easily be generalized to the unique factors that characterize the population here. Thus, the researcher finds that understanding the differences in gender and meaning in life among the emerging adulthood in the Jabodetabek area is a crucial step to bridge the gap in knowledge in cross-cultural positive psychology. The methodology uses a quantitative approach to measure sources of meaning using the Personal Meaning Profile-Brief (Wong, 2012) and gender roles with the Traditional Masculinity-Femininity scale (Kachel, 2016), and analyses with SPSS ver. 23. Results indicate that there are no significant gender differences in terms of overall meaning and sources of meaning, except for relationship. Results also show that adopting gender roles is positively correlated with moderate strength to overall meaning. The results support Frankl’s theory that meaning in life is a universal human need that transcends specific demographics, while the adoption of gender roles in a collective society like Indonesia can increase meaning in life.
