Abstract
Di era tahun 1990, PT. National Panasonic Gobel memperkenalkan merek baru yaitu Panasonic. Untuk dapat memudahkan konsumen dalam membedakan kedua merek tersebi't, maka ditetapkan bahwa merek National digunakan untuk produk pada kategori Kebutuhan Rumah Tangga, seperti Kulkas, pendingin ruangan (AC), Mesin Cuci, sedangkan merek Panasonic dikonsentrasikan pacla merek produk-produk audio visual. Pada perkembangannya, merek National justru memberikan kontribusi terbesar penjualan sebesar 70% dibandingkan dengan merek Panasonic sebesar 30% di Indonesia. Secara Global, justru merek Panasonic memberikan kontribusi penjualan sebesar 90%, sedangkan merek National hanya sebesar 10%. Dalam rangka peningkatan kontribusi merek Panasonic di Indonesia, kantor pusat Matsushita electric Co. LTD di Jepang memutuskan untuk merubah merek National menjadi Panasonic. Hasil dari program perubahan merek ini menunjukkan masukan positif maupun negatif. Masukan positif adalah berkenaan dengan tingkat penerimaan konsumen akan kehadiran merek Panasonic sebagai pengganti merek Naiional. Namun, disisi lain konsumen masih meragukan akan durabilitas produk merek Panasonic, yang tentunya akan mempengaruhi keputusan pembelian produk. Eksistensi merek Panasonic justru seJang mengalami saat penentuan untuk menjadi pemimpin merek sesuai dengan visi manajemen, dengan harus menunjukkan peningkatan mutu produk
