Abstract

Traditionally news media plays big role to become the watchdog of democracy. However this is not easy to do because news media must be independent from the media owner, interest group, political, and business. Media independency becoming more important in big issue like blasphemy that involving DKI Governor and incumbent Ahok between 2016-2017. This issue becomes headlines in all mainstream online media every day for several months. The mainstream online news exploits information technology ability to update the news quickly and interactively for 24 hour a day. However the online news rarely publish a comprehensive news, and this could give negative impact to democracy in Indonesia. Therefore the research about online media independence in the blasphemy case of Ahok become important to do. This research uses quantitative approach with content analytic method. The data collection use online news collection from 12 mainstream online media collected between September 27th 2016 to February 27th 2017 as the primary data, and literature and documentation as the sources of secondary data. The research proves that media is independent from the Government, Political Party, and Interest Group, but not independent from the Business priority. / Media berita dalam tradisinya berperan besar dalam menjaga terwujudnya, namun dalam praktiknya hal ini tidak mudah dilakukan karena media harus menjaga independensinya dari tekanan kepentingan pemilik, kelompok tertentu, politik, dan bisnis. Independensi media ini menjadi semakin penting ketika media meliput peristiwa besar seperti kasus penistaan agama yang melibatkan Gubernur DKI dan Petahana Basuki “Ahok” Tjahaja Purnama selama kurun tahun 2016-2017. Peristiwa ini menjadi berita utama pada seluruh media online arus utama setiap hari selama berbulan-bulan. Media online arus utama mengeksploitasi seluruh kemampuan teknologi informasinya untuk menerbitkan perkembangan kasus setiap saat dalam 24 jam secara cepat dan interaktif. Namun berita online jarang menampilkan berita yang utuh, dan ini bisa berdampak negatif terhadap demokrasi di Indonesia. Untuk itulah penelitian tentang independensi media online ketika meliput kasus penistaan agama oleh Ahok menjadi penting untuk dilakukan. Penelitian ini menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif dengan metode penelitian analisis isi. Pengumpulan data penelitian dilakukan dengan data primer, yaitu kumpulan berita tentang penistaan agama oleh Ahok dari 12 media online arus utama antara tanggal 27 September 2016 sampai dengan 27 Februari 2017, serta data sekunder berupa studi kepustakaan dan dokumentasi. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa independensi media terwujud terhadap Pemerintahan, Partai Politik, dan Masyarakat, namun tidak terwujud terhadap kepentingan Bisnis.
