Abstract

Computer network is one of the foundation in a company. Due to the expansion of the company, there are some needs to connect several sites to become an integral network. There are many solutions to that problem such as: VPN, Fiber Optic, Frame Relay, etc. Virtual Private Networking is the answer to that problem. Using VPN, the company can build a cheap and secure network via internet. Many companies use VPN technology in their company network. However it’s important to understand how VPN works and how to implement VPN in a smaller scale, before attempting to implement in the real case. The network problem has been taken from a real study case. The cost to implement VPN is cheaper than other WAN technology. Nowadays, security is one of criteria when someone wants to build a network. Unlike other WAN technology, VPN encrypted data that passed in VPN tunnel. Through this emulation, it’s found out that VPN is the best solution for the study case problem. The advantages of using VPN is: it is relatively cheap (652 % cheaper for the implementation cost and 1832 % cheaper for monthly maintenance fee than other WAN solutions) and secure. The limitation of this thesis is: it just covers how to design and implement VPN in emulated WAN cloud.
