Abstract

There are many applications which still require the use of embedded device and legacy hardware device in Indonesia. Most of these legacy hardware communicate with embedded device utilizing an obsolete interface technology such as IEEE284 which is considered less convenient compared to bluetooth technology. However, most embedded devices support the use of basic interfacing technology such as RS-232. This research attempts to solve the problem by developing a device to communicate and control IEEE284 device from a RS-232 port over bluetooth technology. The prototype utilizes two microcontrollers for converting IEEE284 protocol to RS-232 and two bluetooth communication modules for transmitting and receiving data between the two microcontrollers. The evaluation of the prototype shows that it has successfully established bluetooth communication between the IEEE284 device and the embedded device. The microcontrollers have successfully control IEEE284 device from RS-232 port by converting RS-232 protocol to IEEE284 protocol over bluetooth connection. The constructed prototype has one hundred percent success rate according to 32 times of test performed on it
