Abstract

Reading and writing skills are important aspects in learning English to develop the student’s language ability. The right model of learning can help students to get the best achievement. The problem that is encountered by the teachers is the lack of reading ability to understand a reading text. When students have difficulties in reading comprehension, it will affect their ability in writing. This issue had brought the researcher’s attention to analyze the problem and tried to find solutions. The objective of this research is to use the Cooperative Learning – STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) to increase the skills of reading comprehension, writing and the cooperation among students. This research used experiment research to 20 students of Grade 7. The treatment was done in 3 weeks in class. The result from pretest and posttest: the reading comprehension N-gain 0.47 (mid-level), the writing N-gain 0.32 (low) and cooperation N-gain 0.48 (average). Based on the result, it is concluded that Cooperative Learning (STAD) could affect only the improvement of reading comprehension and cooperation among JHS St John students at mid-level / Keterampilan membaca dan menulis merupakan aspek yang penting dalam pembelajaran Bahasa Inggris untuk perkembangan bahasa siswa. Model pembelajaran yang tepat akan membantu siswa dalam mencapai hasil yang terbaik. Kendala yang dihadapi guru saat ini adalah kemampuan siswa memahami sebuah teks bacaan sangatlah kurang. Ketika siswa kesulitan memahami sebuah teks bacaan, maka akan mempengaruhi kemampuan menulis siswa. Sehingga masalah tersebut membawa keresahan untuk peneliti agar dapat menganalisa masalah dan berusaha mencari cara untuk menyelesaikan masalah tersebut. Tujuan dari penelitian ini adalah penggunaan pembelajaran kooperatif tipe STAD (Student Teams Achievement Division) untuk meningkatkan keterampilan pemahaman bacaan, keterampilan menulis dan kerja sama. Penelitian ini merupakan penelitian weak-eksperiment yang dilakukan terhadap 20 siswa di kelas 7. Perlakuan penelitian dilakukan selama 3 minggu melalui kegiatan di kelas. Hasil pretest dan posttest didapatkan: keterampilan pemahaman bacaan dengan N-gain 0.47 (sedang), pada keterampilan menulis dengan nilai N-gain 0.32 (rendah) dan kerja sama dengan nilai N-gain 0.48 (sedang). Berdasarkan hasil tersebut, dapat diketahui bahwa pembelajaran menggunakan pendekatan pembelajaran kooperatif (STAD) berpengaruh terhadap keterampilan pemahaman bacaan dan kerja sama siswa SMP St John pada tingkat sedang.
