Abstract

Even though the diplomatic relation between China and Indonesia was disturbed at first, but the relationship gradually moves towards a better position. China has realized the roles of soft power to exert influence on Indonesia as well as other countries. Many viewed China's rapid economic development as a threat. Chinese government realizes that the issue must be immediately taken-care of, and therefore China is trying to show a positive image by introducing the concept of Peaceful Rise of China in mid-2000s. The concept appear in order to show the world that China is a friendly country and their rapid development was not a threat. China also has a desire to strengthen its position and balance The United States power in Southeast Asia. China's rapid development also made this country need a lot of energy resources. Indonesia, as one of the countries with strategic geographic location and abundant energy resources was considered as important country for China's development. Soft power an be define as the ability to get what you want through attraction. This thesis attemps to explain about the meanings, natures, and the types of China’s soft power toward Indonesia, and argued what China should taken into account about what is desired by Indonesia, if China wants to build its soft power throughout the country. The concepts used in this thesis are the concept of soft power, Bilateral Relation, and China’s foreign strategy. This research looked at the approach of bilateral relations between China and Indonesia based on the perspective of realism. The research method used is descriptive-analytic in qualitative method with the descriptive approach. The data collecting technique used is the combination of primary technique, through in-depth interview as well as secondary technique through literature study, media, internet sites, and documentation. This research indicate that the purpose of China’s soft power strategy is to acquire a positive image throughout Indonesia. Through strategic partnership with Indonesia, China want to show that the country is a partner, not a threat. On top of that, China realized that Indonesia is a country with abundant energy resources, thus can help China to meet the national interest and need for energy resources.
