Abstract

India status as a late comer de facto NWS legitimizes its possession of nuclear power as well as its predicament in less developed nuclear technology and incompetency to attain equal privilege with five de jure NWSs. Subsequently, its rapidly growing energy demand and faster energy deficit multiplication precipitate its dependency on imported electricity. Inextricable correlation between India’s nuclear and energy security is described in government ambition to manipulate nuclear for inexpensive electricity generation. This research aims to explain the adverse implication India ingrains from its stance in nuclear nonproliferation and nuclear disarmament toward its nuclear capability to achieve energy security. This research comprises of several concepts, such as: regional security complex theory, traditional security (balance of threat and deterrence), nontraditional security (energy security), nuclear security regime (non-proliferation and disarmament), nuclear apartheid and foreign policy. Analysis in this research is conducted in qualitative method; particularly using narrative history and illustrative method in deductive manner. Secondary data is preferred to complement the research with academic journals, official written policy, Internet sites, media and quantitative data (statistical reports). Research analysis exhibits that India’s censure of nuclear regime discriminative measure has caused it inexorable obstacles in sustaining reactors performance. India’s nuclear apartheid non-compliance to NPT, IAEA inspection, CTBT, FMCT and NWFZ result in NSG exclusion. Such multilateral endeavors are formidably restraining India from accessing nuclear two main ingredients: technology and fuel. Retaining this prevailing nuclear stance is overwhelmingly vulnerable to nuclear trade and emasculating nuclear function of realizing independent domestic elecetricity supply.
