Abstract

The American Pain Society introduced that "pain as the 5th vital sign". The initiative emphasizes that pain is as important as other components of other vital signs such as blood pressure, pulse, breathing, and temperature. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organization introduces standards for pain assessment and management that are relevant to many health care provisions and arrangements. This standard emphasizes that patients have their right to be assessed and received pain management. Nurses’ adherence becomes the benchmark of nurse's success in meeting the standards or rules. Purpose: The purpose of this research is to know the description of the nurses compliance to assess pain as a component of the vital signs asessment in the inpatient department of SHLB. Method: This research use a quantitative descriptive method with observation approach. The respondents are all nurses in inpatient department of SHLB. This study will use total sampling of 16 nurses. The data will be collected by direct observation using table checklist based on Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) of pain assessment that apply at SHLB. Result: A study of 16 nurses’ in Inpatient wards obtained 100% non-compliant nurses in assessing pain as a component of vital signs assessment.
