Background: insomnia is one of the sleep disorders that can occur in some people in the world. Anyone who wants insomnia will have difficulty falling asleep, enduring sleep, or waking up early. The phenomenon found at the West Indonesia private university, 11 students experienced mild insomnia and 9 difficulties with severe insomnia. Research objectives: to determine the factors associated with the incidence of insomnia in students at the Western Indonesian private university. Research Methods: this study uses quantitative research methods with cross-sectional research. the research sample borrowed 191 students from the 2017 force using a purposive random sampling technique. The research instrument used the insomnia severity index questionnaire, PASS, STAI, and the smartphone usage questionnaire at night. to determine the factors associated with insomnia, researchers used the Kendall-tau c test and Somers' D. Result: based on the results of statistical tests, knowing the factors associated with the incidence of insomnia in students, (p = 0,000), stress (p = 0,000) and smartphone use at night (p = 0,042). It can be concluded as factors related to questionable insomnia, stress, and smartphone usage at night. Recommendations: Further researches are advised to learn about other factors that can be associated with the incidence of insomnia in students such as age, genetics, and gender.
