Abstract
Background: Culture shock occurs when the individual is in an unfamiliar environment and requires the individual to adjust to his new environment. Adjustment is a coping mechanism for someone to overcome the problem of change and this is often experienced by students who study outside the area with cultural diversity in their new environment. The existence of normal reactions in students who experience adjustment to cultural changes leads to conflict from the process of self-adjustment. Aim: to know the relationship between cultural shock with selfadjustment of first-degree nursing students at Pelita Harapan University. Research Method: This research uses correlational quantitative research methods with cross sectional approach. The sampling technique uses purposive sampling. The research instrument used a questionnaire with a total sample of 183 first-level students with univariate and bivariate data analysis. Bivariate data analysis uses chi square test. This research was conducted in April-May 2020. Results: The results showed that the majority of respondents needed a shock culture of 50.8% and the majority of respondents could adjust to 50.3%. Probability value = 0.355> 0.05 which means there is no relationship between culture shock and nursing students’ first level themselves. Recommendations: Future research is expected to identify other factors that can influence culture shock to nursing student’s self-adjustment at first level.
