Abstract

Background: Palliative care is an approach used to improve quality of life of the patients. One of the approaches of palliative care is symptom management. Each patient experienced different symptoms in the end of his life. Shortness of breath is one of the symptoms that often occur in palliative patients. One of the non-pharmacological therapy that can be used to treat this symptom is acupuncture therapy. Acupuncture therapy is one of the therapies that are considered safe and does not cause serious side effects. Purpose of Literature Review: to determine the effectiveness of acupuncture therapy in reducing shortness of breath in palliative patients. Method: This study will use literature review. Articles will be search use databases such as Research Gate: 66, Pubmed: 91 and Google Scholar: 6000. All of the result have been selected using PRISMA flow diagrams for the article selection process, and using Joanna Briggs Institute (JBI) Critical Appraisal tools for eligibility test. This literature review use a simplified thematic approach for analysis of results. Result: from five articles that have been analyzed show that the techniques, duration of therapy, evaluation methods according to suitable method of acupuncture therapy are effective in reducing shortness of breath in palliative patients significantly. Conclusion: acupuncture therapy has been proven effective in reducing symptoms of shortness of breath in palliative care patients.
