Abstract
At this time, handmade crafts using environmentally friendly materials are being developed in Indonesia. This opens up opportunities for art workers to develop new things that are unique and can attract consumer interest. The mixing of the two materials is often used by kramikus but not as an accent decoration but to increase the strength of a ceramic so that it can withstand extreme temperature changes when burning raku. The technique of mixing sand and clay also has very various kinds, by grinding, sowing, mixing with glaze, etc. Using a mixture of sand and clay can use most pottery techniques. There are many motives that can be generated from the two mixtures. The research began with the search for secondary data on sand and interviews, then continued with exploration of mixing and burning to find ceramics with a mixture of sand that was not easily broken and produced natural and abstract motifs. From all the research results, the writer found that Malang sand and Semarang beach sand had the most positive results compared to other types of sand, Malang sand and Semarang beach sand could melt and produce unique motifs and have a darker black color after being burned. Although the mixture of clay and sand requires greater attention, this material has great potential in the development of ceramic decoration, the characteristics and uniqueness of this material are shown in the last 3 collections well.
